Planetarium
When the painter
climbed aboard his plank
to paint this planetarium,
I doubt he dreamed of us two,
lying here holding hands
and staring wide-eyed
at the stars.
I know about infinity -
The globe you gave me for Christmas
is propped beside my bedroom window.
At night with the curtains aside
I can see for myself the earth
against the universe.
Yet at the centre of our continent
there's you at your window,
ironing your clothes for morning.
You flick your hair
and whole nebulae are brushed aside.
Supernovas, black holes
and all those faint and unaffecting constellations
are eclipsed as you test your shirt
by the light.
Stars are distant
and take their place among many
while you, by your nature
are beautiful and rare
and undeniably
of this world.
