Loss
It began raining and I was soaked.
All I could think was of my Sisters meal, ruined.
The rain gelled my quiff to my face
as I leapt long strides across junctions
of cars and high onto curbs.
It was 6. Kids splashed by
with new shoes, black eyes, boxes
and boxes of eggs, the rain like cobwebs, now,
clogging my mouth. Cars sizzled past
like potatoes in a pan of fat.
What I thought was a stop signal
thrown back by the wet tarmac
was a tomato ditched from a sandwich at the lights.
And there it was, on my shoe,
staining the damp suede red
surprising shocking panicking me
that ANYONE COULD BE SO STUPID
and then it came,
the touch of cold stone,
the wild bare beautiful trees and her
in it all, soaked in it,
brushing the hair from my forehead
speaking calmly saying
dont go out tonight darling
its pouring.
