Mirrorball
Charlotte Anne took her husband
To the dance hall where they first had met
And they danced for a while
While the mirrorball turned stars above their heads
Bought her wine and him bitter
His first since he stopped drinking for his heart
And they sat for a while
Talking quietly in the quarter dark
Then he walked her home
After all this time she's like some great unknown
Keeping their heat from the cold
Walking home
Charlotte Anne took her husband
To the nightclub where they saw the Beatles play
It's a supermarket now
But it felt quite a moment just the same
Ringo sat by the butchers
Paul MacCartney somewhere near the fruit and veg
And the piped music pumped "Can't Buy Me Love"
Beside the cashiers desk
Then he walked her home
After all this time she's like some great unknown
Keeping their heat from the cold
Walking home
Charlotte Anne took her husband
To the fair and to the carousel
And they drank lemonade
Sat upon the flat stones of the wishing well
Bought her rides on the waltzer
And some brandy snap to eat while walking home
Saying this is like the old days
Only now we're old
Then he walked her home
No feeling on earth like that great unknown
Keeping their heat from the cold
Walking home
